ROME 10 October 2013 07.44………
One week on from the historic meeting at Anglet, where the President of FIRA-AER, Octavian Morariu had assembled the leaders of the European Beach Rugby movement to discuss the potential of new European Beach 5’s Nations tournament, one can safely say that European Beach 5’s Rugby has taken another great step forward.
Following Wednesday’s meeting in Rome, between FIR President Alfredo Gavazzi and FIRA-AER Vice President, Zeno Zanadrea, the Italian Rugby Federation Headquarters officially announced yesterday that they were prepared to support the initiative to develop the proposed new European Beach 5’s Nations tournament.
While nothing is yet final, talk is that the new event looks set to follow the already ‘successfully tested model’, which has been played at European Club level during the last 2 seasons, where to much acclaim, the LIGNANO BEACH ARENA played host to the European Beach Rugby Association (E.B.R.A) European Beach 5’s Clubs Series / Cup Final.[pullquote align=”right”]”It’s an important day…official recognition for the work we have been doing since 2004″ [/pullquote]Needless to say the word from Rome has been greeted with much satisfaction in Friuli. “It’s an important day,” commented Cesare Zambelli, “because it’s finally official recognition for the work we have been doing since 2004 right up to today. The LIGNANO INTERNATIONAL CUP tournament has been a kind of precursor for the development of the Beach Rugby movement, first here in Italy and now Europe wide, bringing the rules to the attention of the International Rugby Board and demonstrating the potential of this new format of Rugby. Infact you could say that the Beach 5’s Rugby ‘Big Bang’ literally exploded from the Arena at Beach #7 Lignano Sabbiadoro.”
And it’s a perfect example of dynamic teamwork. “ Certainly, the great support received from the Regional Friuli Venezia Giulia authority, the local community of Lignano Sabbiadoro and from the Italian Rugby Federation and its Past President Giancarlo Dondi who supported the Italian Beach Rugby movement going back as far as 1998. Incredible teamwork. For sure without everyone’s involvement we wouldn’t be where we are,” added Zambelli.
So with the signs becoming increasingly positive, we’re eagerly looking forward to learning more from the next phase of discussions, which include FIRA-AER, FIR (Italian Rugby Federation), FFR (French Rugby Federation), FPR (Portuguese Rugby Federation) FER (Spanish Rugby Federation).
While winter is approaching here in Europe, there’s no fear of the SB5 Clubhouse getting cold, certainly not with all this ‘HOT NEWS’ stuff going on.
