The Torneo Rosso Open 2013 at Bibione has once again delivered a wonderful international Beach Rugby festival bathed in Adriatic sunshine. With 30 teams participating it was an intense weekend of activity on and off the field.
The big surprises in the Ladies event were the early elimination of the Red Panthers, TREVISO and the arrival of “Valsu-Velenose”, a squad made up of players from Valsugana and Velenose di Ferrara. Having made it through to the final it was unfortunate that they then had to face one of Italy’s strongest ladies squads, Nutrie del Riviera del Brenta. And so it proved with Nutrie running out winners with a score of 11-1 and taking the 2013 Champions title.
In the Mens Event, Saturday’s play indicated that 2 teams, Valpo & Porto would battle it out for the title. However in the final qualification phase yesterday, while Valpo made it through to the final, it was Cocai Trieste that battled through the other side of the draw to meet them. And in what proved to be one of the most memorable Bibione finals for years, it was Coccai who claimed a hard fought victory with the tight scoreline of 4-3.
Enrico Basso, tournament organiser, was again delighted with how the 2013 event rolled out and promised that Torneo Rosso 2014 will see the tournament’s international appeal grow still further. Highlights of the tournament can be seen on-line from this coming Thursday 20th June at www.rugbymagazine.eu
