Ged Stone 1965 – 2014
At just 49 years of age, our friend Ged Stone has been taken away from us much too soon.
One of our Elite SB5 Referee’s for the last number of seasons, Ged started his refereeing career in 1990, becoming a member of the English RFU refereeing panel during the seasons 2002 – 2005. But of all Rugby’s formats, perhaps it was officiating at SEVENS and 10s tournaments, where Ged found his refereeing home. From Amsterdam to Barcelona, Kenya to Kinsale, he played a valuable role in many SEVENS refereeing panels from 1998-2012.
With the growing popularity of BEACH 5s RUGBY, it was no surprise that he also found his way to LIGNANO SABBIADORO. And together with WRU & RFU colleagues & friends, Dave Drury & Chris Webb, Ged became more than just a valued and respected member of our SB5 ref panel, he became our friend.
In 2012 Ged refereed the history making, first ever, EBRA European Club Cup final between Italy’s Padova Beach and Hollands RC The Hookers. In what turned out to be a match of high suspense and drama, it was Ged’s calm and assured control in the centre of the BEACH ARENA that ensured it will always be remembered as one of the greatest finals we’ve ever seen in LIGNANO.
Hearing of Ged’s passing makes us hugely sad and our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and two sons together with all his family and friends.
SUPER BEACH 5s RUGBY is immensely proud to have known and worked with you Ged.
In the field of play, he was one of ‘The Untouchables’
Thanks mate….for everything !
