This coming weekend in Figueira da Foz (Portugal), all is set for the Figueria International 2013 & Leg 3 of the inaugural 2013 EBRA Beach 5’s Series.
And many of Europe’s leading Beach 5’s squads will be in town in the hope of scooping up some valuable points towards the overall Series classification. So far, in the opening 2 legs, success has favoured the home sides with OVALE Beach Marseille taking the opening Leg in France and The Ghent MAGNETS taking the 2nd Leg in Belgium.
Indeed, last year in Portugal, home advantage also proved helpful to Figueira’s 2012 Champions “Direito”, who finished the weekend as hometown heroes. But 2013 in Portugal is going to be a very different prospect. The local Portuguese squads will shortly find themselves up against some mighty opposition. From Belgium, The Ghent MAGNETS make their return, as do eternal Italian Beach 5’s specialists, The Maccarese. While from England, Barty Hills ‘Flair Bears’ will make a stylish 1st visit, as will Andre Gini’s ‘Mighty’ PACIFIC ISLANDERS, together with Manu Wilhelm & Germany’s finest, THE ROMANTICS.
While it’s all to play for, the biggest question is whether it’s possible for The Ghent MAGNETS to make it 4 from 4 ? In the latest interview with Magnets captain, Sander Van Wassenhove said ‘the MAGNETS are currently in ‘Epic’ form. As close friends,’ he said, ‘the squad are totally bonded and well drilled. We learned a lot last season, particularly at Lignano, when we lost out in the quarter finals. We underestimated our opposition, that was for the first and last time’.
Figueira tournament director, Rui Loureiro, is promising one hell of a tournament from sunrise to sunset. The tournament starts on Saturday 13th with the qualification phase and will complete with the finals on Sunday 14th July. The weather forecast is shaping up for some clear sky and hot sands…..all systems are go !
