What have the Heineken Cup, French Top 14, Beglium XV, Belgium 7′s, Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens, Belgium U23, France U20, Fiji and Belgium U19 got in common ?
The GHENT MAGNETS of course !
As one of the outstanding European Beach 5′s squads in recent years, the GHENT MAGNETS boasts an impressive list of past and present members who have found that their feet work just as well on grass as they do on SAND!
Starting with Magnet ‘Player Manager & Publicist’ Supremo, Sander ‘Wakkie’ Van Wassenhove who has just returned from an ankle inqury to make his way straight into the No.8 slot on the Belgian U23 National squad.
While their big line breaker at SB5 Lignano 2012 was the young Jean Bapitste De Clercq (125kg) who has this season been selected for the France U20 training camp in preparation for the forthcoming 2014 6Nations U20 campaign. Go JBDC![Gallery not found]
Add to this, Savenaca Vocea, son of the Fijian Ambassador to Belgium, who last month played for Belgium U19′s at the European Championship, but who also this season played a significant part in the successful Magnets squad that took the 2013 Zeebrugge Beach 5′s Masters title.
Then there is their formidale foursome of Emiel Vermote, Jaco McLachlan and brothers, Tom & Bram Coupé. Having helped the Ghent Magnets power their way to the final at SB5 Lignano 2011, all 4 have since been selected to play for the Belgium 7′s National team. Indeed Emiel, Jaco & Bram will travel with the National team to play at the 2013 Dubai Rugby Sevens Invitational in 2 weeks as preparation for Belgium’s participation in the 2014 FIRA European Grand Prix Sevens series next summer, where they will play against the Elite of European Sevens Rugby.[Gallery not found]
And last but not least there’s Jens Torfs who, having played with the Magnets in 2011, progressed to Belgium 7′s & XV teams, and now finds himself playing Centre/Three-quarter with French Top 14 side, USAP Perpignan, alongside a host of international three-quarter stars including David Marty (FranceXV) and Tomaso Benvenuti (ItaliaXV).
Proof positive that the FUTURE STARS of WORLD RUGBY are being ‘BORN on the BEACH’.
