VIENNA CHOIR BOYS – Challenger #1

While these guys come from Vienna, ‘Choir Boys’ they ain’t.

In 2013 the Danube Pirates firmly put an ‘X’ on Beach Rugby’s Treasure Map when they landed in Lignano, producing one of the finest displays by an Austrian rugby squad…EVER. In defeating the Flair Bears to secure 7th place in the final 2013 classification, they made rugby history, being the first Austrian team to defeat an English side on an international rugby stage.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have been such a surprise. Afterall the Pirates squad is principally made up of players from Austria’s leading rugby club, RU Donau Wien. Indeed many of them including Captain ‘Benni’ Dachler, Navas (Bundesliga Top Scorer), Radomirov, Leidl, Kerschbaumer and Freydell form a vital part of Austria’s National 15s squad. Skill, speed and an agile, committed defense were the hallmarks of their performance in 2013.

For 2014, the PIRATES are plotting a course to take them all the way. Here, at the home of International SUPER BEACH 5’s RUGBY, we recognise their committment and so we are proud to announce The DANUBE PIRATES have been accepted as the 1st Challenger for SB5 2014……let the treasure hunt begin !
