Here at SB5 HQ, a key part of our sporting mission is to continually ‘promote and support’ the development of BEACH 5’s RUGBY around the world. These days new tournaments are starting up literally everywhere. And as we know from the wave of activity here in Europe, in cities like Munich and London, you don’t even need a Beach to have a Beach Rugby tournament.
The Beach Rugby movement may still be considered small in official Rugby circles but we are all growing, growing at the speed of sound. It’s the power of Word-of-Mouth. And it’s incredible how the word continues to spread. Every year we receive increasingly more and more applications from teams, who want their shot at trying to win the legendary LIGNANO INTERNATIONAL CUP.
[frame align=”left”]Pasargad BRFC – warming up, Kish Island[/frame]As most will already know, SB5 is a 12 team invitational tournament. We are therefore always restricted by numbers. While being selective, we always remain open to a team who impresses us with their will and desire to rise to the SUPER BEACH 5s Challenge. This year, our 5th Challenger is not only a newcomer, they are also the first squad from the continent of Asia to follow the path to Lignano’s golden shores. We are therefore honoured to welcome PASARGAD from IRAN.
While the sport of rugby is relatively new to Iran (Iranian Rugby Union was officially founded in 2000), they have progressed quickly, playing in the Asian Games and becoming an associate member of IRB-ARFU in 2010. Mens 15-a-side and Womens Sevens are the most popular formats but no surprise that Beach 5s has also taken hold. Afterall Iran has coastline looking onto both the Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf coast. They’ve already staged their first two Beach 5’s tournaments on Kish Island. Have a look at the Clip from Iran Rugby 5 – http://on.fb.me/1mP2FcX
The PASARGAD squad will be a selection of the top players from Iran’s 14 Rugby Clubs. And judging by their appetite to play, the LIGNANO elite will need to pay attention when these guys enter the ARENA.
